Anglite Geological Properties
Anglite is a form of anhydrite, which is a crystal made of calcium sulfate. The crystals are formed in places where gypsum stones had previously been in contact with water, which then evaporates, leaving anhydrite crystals behind.
Mineral Information: Calcium Sulphate
Hardness: 3-1/2 (Mohs)
Color: Pale Blue
Chemical Composition: CaSO4
The largest deposits of Angelite are in Peru and Mexico, but it is also found in some areas of Europe, Libya, and Egypt. Workers at local lapidary factories in Lima, Peru craft wands, eggs, and animal carvings from Angelite.
It is most commonly believed that Anglite is a form of Anhydrite that is only found in Peru and thus has deeper blue color to it. It is important to note that both Anhydrite and Angelite are made up of Calcium Sulfate so they are essentially the same mineral.
Despite the common occurrence of Anhyrdite, good quality specimens are extremely rare. It is also a fairly new gemstone, having only been discovered in 1987 in Peru. On the very rare occasion, you may find a piece that is green and similar in appearance to Malachite
