African Bloodstone Cat & Moon Bowl

Geologically, bloodstone is formed through the deposition of silica-rich fluids in cavities or fractures within rocks. The green color is due to the presence of iron minerals, such as chlorite, while the red spots or streaks are typically caused by the presence of hematite or iron oxide.

Bloodstone is a type of quartz mineral that forms in igneous rocks, such as basalt or andesite, deep within the Earth's mantle:

Chalcedony, a type of quartz, with iron oxide inclusions; Dark green with red spots

Magma rises from the mantle, carrying minerals and gases. As the magma cools, it solidifies into igneous rocks, and minerals precipitate out of the solution in cavities created by gas bubbles. Silica-rich fluids percolate through the cavities, depositing layers of chalcedony.

Typically found embedded in rocks or riverbeds as pebbles. Primary sources include India, Brazil, and Australia.

Bloodstone is also known as heliotrope, which comes from the Greek words hḗlios (sun) and trépein (to turn). The red spots in bloodstone are thought to represent the blood of Christ. It was used by the Babylonians to make seals and amulets, and was believed to have healing powers.

Bloodstone is a birthstone for March. It's a popular choice for jewelry because of its toughness and hardness of 6.5–7.
