Larvikite is a feldspar-rich igneous rock, called a monzonite and is named for the town in Norway where it was found. One characteristic of this stone is its blue sheen or labradorescence, caused by the presence of interlocking feldspar crystals within the structure of the stone.

Larvikite is also found in the Killala Lake Alkalic Rock Complex near Thunder Bay in Ontario, Canada. The name originates from the town of Larvik in Norway, where this type of igneous rock is found. Many quarries exploit larvikite in the vicinity of Larvik.

Labradorite is known for its extensive colour spectrum, which can include fiery oranges and reds beyond larvikite's typical blues and silvers. Chemically, labradorite is a calcium-rich feldspar, distinguishing it from the magnesium and lower-calcium composition of larvikite.
