Blue aventurine is a variety of quartz that exhibits a blue color due to the presence of small, fibrous dumortierite inclusions. It is a type of aventurine, which is known for its translucent to opaque appearance and sparkling aventurescence effect. While blue aventurine is naturally occurring, it's quite rare, and many blue-colored stones on the market are created by heat-treating green aventurine or gray quartz.Â
Geological Formation and Characteristics:
Quartz as the Host:
Blue aventurine is fundamentally a form of quartz, which is a silicon dioxide mineral.Â
Dumortierite Inclusions:
The characteristic blue color is caused by small, fibrous inclusions of the mineral dumortierite within the quartz.Â
Aventurescence:
The presence of these inclusions, along with other small mineral inclusions, creates the sparkling or glittery effect known as aventurescence.Â
Natural vs. Enhanced:
While naturally occurring blue aventurine is rare, much of the blue-colored aventurine available is produced through heat treatment of green aventurine or gray quartz to enhance the blue tones, according to Find Gemstone.Â
