Red Congo Philodendron Rare Tropical Plant (1 gallon)
The Red Congo philodendron, also known as Philodendron tatei 'Congo Rojo', is a tropical plant with the following biological characteristics:
The Red Congo philodendron is a member of the Araceae family, the Alismatales order, and the Philodendron genus. Native to the understory of South American rainforests, the Red Congo philodendron is a cultivar of the Philodendron tatei species. The Red Congo philodendron is a self-heading plant, meaning it grows upwards and outwards from a single central stem, rather than climbing or vining like other philodendrons. It can grow up to 4 feet tall indoors. New leaves unfurl red and mature to a dark green with a reddish cast. The leaves are thick and glossy. In the jungle, mature plants flower, but this rarely occurs indoors. The flowers are mildly fragrant and come in a variety of colors, including pink, purple, red, green, and white. The Red Congo philodendron has few thick main roots, numerous thin lateral roots, and many thick aerial roots. The Red Congo philodendron prefers 3 to 4 hours of bright indirect light, but can adjust to medium light. It should be kept away from direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves. The Red Congo philodendron should be grown in a fertile, moist but well-draining, non-alkaline soil.
They are not climbers like other philodendrons but instead are “self-heading” plants, meaning they grow new foliage in layers from a single stalk. They have thick glossy burgundy to green leaves and have a compact clumping growth habit. New leaves unfurl red, but mature into a verdant green while the stalks remain red.
